What is the Red Sand Project?

The Red Sand Project is an on-going, worldwide collaborative art installation created to raise awareness of human trafficking. Participants fill sidewalk cracks with red sand which signifies the 98% of people victimized by human trafficking who fall through the cracks. That’s over 40 million people.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking is making someone provide labor or sex through force, fraud or coercion. Human trafficking happens everywhere, even right here in Cedar Rapids.

What is Chains Interrupted?

Chains Interrupted fights human trafficking through awareness, prevention and advocacy. On July 30th, Chains Interrupted will be raising awareness about human trafficking by partnering with the Red Sand Project.

How can community members participate?

You can participate in the Chains Interrupted Red Sand Project by signing up as a volunteer on the Chains Interrupted website. As a volunteer, you will be assigned to an area of downtown Cedar Rapids to pour red sand in the sidewalk cracks and write messages with chalk. We will start pouring sand at 8:00AM and have a short, exciting rally at Greene Square Park at 10:00AM, which will include hearing from a survivor!

Why should they participate?

This event will give you an opportunity to start a conversation with those you love about the reality of human trafficking in our community. It will also raise awareness through social media to everyone in your sphere of influence which can educate them and ultimately help prevent others from falling prey.
