Volunteer: Meals VolunteerDuring the week, clients at Willis Dady are able to visit other meal sites in the community for any food they need. On weekends, many of these sites close, so Willis Dady looks for groups of volunteers to prepare and serve a meal to the clients. These meals bring needed sustenance and a sense of comfort and support to the clients, as it helps demonstrate the community’s support in their efforts to find housing and employment. The meal should be completely prepared before coming to the shelter on the scheduled day. Bring any specific serving utensils needed, though our shelter can usually supply eating utensils or plates/bowls. It should be brought in throw-away containers or containers you do not want back. We ask that it be brought in three equal portions or in individual servings. We understand if this is not possible, and our staff can divide the food instead. The meal should feed 35 individuals.

Volunteer: Making Snack PacksHaving snack packs to hand out to clients is extremely helpful. These can be distributed to clients in a number of ways: Our Street Outreach Team can carry these bags with them to hand out to clients who are sleeping outside of somewhere else not meant for habitation. These clients often have limited access to food, so having some on hand is very helpful for our team. We also try to keep non-perishable food in the donation room of our shelter. This food can be handed out to clients in our shelter who are waiting for a food stamp card to arrive or have mobility issues and cannot get to a community food pantry. Outreach clients or other community members also visit our shelter for supplies as they learn to navigate local resources and get connected to a case manager. To help with this need we are looking for donors to assemble snack packs to be dropped off at our shelter (1247 4th Ave SE). Snack packs should include a Ziploc Bag with a combination of the following: Protein or granola bars Beef jerky Trail mix Cracker packs Fruit snacks Cans or packets of chicken or tunaPlease reach out to our Community Engagement Manager at 319-362-7555 or sierra@willisdady.org with any questions! Volunteer: Language Lab Support VolunteerWhat is the Language Lab? Here at the Catherine McAuley Center, we strive to provide the best possible programming to meet our community’s needs. One of our programs that has taken off with great success is the Language Lab. The Language Lab is a drop in computer lab time where a tutor/coach facilitates and engages students to foster Digital Literacy, English competency, and student confidence by utilizing a variety of digital tools. The tools we use are targeted to reach as wide a range of computer and English literacy as possible- Whether it’s the student’s first time holding a mouse or the student has a background in IT, the Language Lab facilitator will try to find the right programs to help the student meet their goals. When can students come and learn? We work as best we can to meet the time needs of our students. To do this, we open our computer lab during our peak hours in the morning and evening. Right now we are open on Wednesday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 10 AM to noon, and on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 PM. In the future we plan on operating every morning and evening that we are open. What else can students do to develop their digital literacy? In addition to the drop in Language Lab times which are structured in a self guided format, students can sign up for one of our guided computer literacy classes that meets every Monday morning. Currently we are taking steps to provide more of the guided digital literacy classes throughout the week. How could I help? The impact of volunteers cannot be overstated here at the CMC. Last year over 350 volunteer tutors helped make our programming possible! If you would like to be a part of what we do, you can sign up for a new tutor orientation on our website, cmc-cr.org/volunteer.
