Join Groundswell Cafe at the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market this summer! We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help run our booth at the Market. Work alongside our team to help serve food, raise funds for our pay-it-forward program, and spread the word about the incredible mission of Groundswell Cafe and Matthew 25. 

Volunteer tasks include running the register (Square), and serving sandwiches. There are two shifts available for this role: 6-9:30am and 9:30am-1pm. We are looking for volunteers to work the booth alongside our staff for the following dates:

Volunteer: Cultivate Hope Corner Store

Stock shelves for a good cause! The Cultivate Hope Corner Store is a small, nonprofit grocery store owned and operated by Matthew 25. Our vision is to make this community grocery store a vibrant space that brings neighbors together and provides a convenient location for healthy food in a food desert neighborhood.

We are looking for volunteers who will provide logistical and hospitality support for day-to-day operations in the Cultivate Hope Corner Store. Tasks assigned may vary depending on store needs for certain days, but generally include helping customers, stocking and organizing shelves, preparing and serving food, and unloading delivery trucks. This position aims to extend the capacity of the Cultivate Hope Corner Store and to sustain resources for healthy and affordable food access in an area located in a food desert.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-Preparing and serving lunch to guests from the lunch counter
-Running the cash register and providing customer service
-Stocking and cleaning shelves; checking dates on products
-Unloading trucks and large deliveries
-Maintaining cleanliness and organization of store space
-Completing occasional drop-offs and deliveries to the Cultivate Hope Urban Farm or Groundswell Cafe

Requirements
-Must present a professional appearance and a friendly manner
-Must be dependable and punctual
-Must be courteous and personable when dealing with the public
-Must be self-directed, willing to take initiative, and detail-oriented
-Must maintain confidentiality of Matthew 25’s volunteers, partners, and donors
-Must be 16 years of age or older

Training & Supervision
-Job shadow shift with Corner Store staff
-Training and supervision conducted by: Corner Store Manager, Assistant Manager, Team Leader, or designated trainer

Time Commitment: Corner Store hours of operation are 9am-7pm Monday-Saturday. We ask that volunteers please commit to a minimum weekly or every other week shift, preferably between the hours of 9am-noon.

Volunteer: Tool Library

      

The Matthew 25 Tool Library is a community resource that provides easy and affordable access to a variety of tools. Our library has an extensive collection of unique hand and power tools from miter, jig and chain saws to power washers and paint sprayers. We try to have a tool for every job and more importantly, provide this service for everyone as part of our larger nonprofit efforts. Many of these tools are used for our other home repair projects with volunteer groups!

Summary: The Tool Library Volunteer will provide ongoing support alongside fellow volunteers in maintaining day-to-day operations in the Tool Library. Tasks include but are not limited to assessing donated tools, helping customers complete their checkouts, and organizing inventory. This position aims to extend the capacity of the Matthew 25 Tool Library to continue to provide a vital resource for free and low-cost tools and to allow community members to access the tools they need to improve their homes and communities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

Provide helpful customer service and assist guests in reserving and renting tools. Assist in regular organization, inventory, and maintenance of tools. Collaborate with other volunteers.  Operate tools and equipment safely.

Requirements 

Must be 18 years of age or older. Be courteous and personable when dealing with the public, staff and other volunteers. Arrive at the agreed upon time for shifts you’ve signed up for. Respect and maintain confidentiality of Matthew 25’s volunteers, partners, and donors.  Willingness to learn and carry out assigned tasks to a high standard of quality. Knowledge of and experience working with tools. Experience operating small engines or power tools is a plus.
