Volunteer: Language Lab Support VolunteerWhat is the Language Lab? Here at the Catherine McAuley Center, we strive to provide the best possible programming to meet our community’s needs. One of our programs that has taken off with great success is the Language Lab. The Language Lab is a drop in computer lab time where a tutor/coach facilitates and engages students to foster Digital Literacy, English competency, and student confidence by utilizing a variety of digital tools. The tools we use are targeted to reach as wide a range of computer and English literacy as possible- Whether it’s the student’s first time holding a mouse or the student has a background in IT, the Language Lab facilitator will try to find the right programs to help the student meet their goals. When can students come and learn? We work as best we can to meet the time needs of our students. To do this, we open our computer lab during our peak hours in the morning and evening. Right now we are open on Wednesday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 10 AM to noon, and on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 PM. In the future we plan on operating every morning and evening that we are open. What else can students do to develop their digital literacy? In addition to the drop in Language Lab times which are structured in a self guided format, students can sign up for one of our guided computer literacy classes that meets every Monday morning. Currently we are taking steps to provide more of the guided digital literacy classes throughout the week. How could I help? The impact of volunteers cannot be overstated here at the CMC. Last year over 350 volunteer tutors helped make our programming possible! If you would like to be a part of what we do, you can sign up for a new tutor orientation on our website, cmc-cr.org/volunteer. Volunteer: Encore Cafe Volunteer @ St. Mark's UMC
Thank you for your interest in helping at Encore Café at our St. Mark's United Methodist location! We are looking for a couple more volunteers to add to this great team we have. We aim to have 5 volunteers per day and also need subs that we can call in the event of sickness, travel or appt. times that come up for other volunteers. This means that you probably would not need to commit to helping every Tuesday, and you can sign up monthly for those that work for you or have spaces that need filled. What we like to do is have prospective volunteers to come and visit an Encore Café first to get an idea of what Encore Café IS, what we do and how our mealtimes are run—to make sure it’s something that they are (still) interested in helping out with, as well as get to know them a bit as well as talk about availability. In general, we set up around 10:15 and serve from 11:30-12:30. We would also treat you to a fabulous lunch as that is a perk of being a volunteer as well, we all eat together about 12:15 before we clean up. We are generally cleaned up and out of there anywhere between 1 and 1:30. (Volunteers wear jeans and comfy shoes, just so you know.)
Tasks: Provide a happy and warm atmosphere by greeting participants and making them feel welcome. Serve and assist participants as necessary. Clean and sanitize table after meal service. Assist in setting up and taking down serving line. etc. Follow directions of Site Coordinator or person in charge. Maintain proper cleanliness and follow all food safety guidelines. Complete food employee/volunteer illness reporting form annuallySkills: Friendly personality and good personal interaction skills/ “people” person. Basic communication skills Friendly person Customer service drivenAbilities: Ability to think independently Ability to be flexible with assigned tasks Customer service oriented

Volunteer: CompuPlace Instructor at ECCFCould you assist people with their lifelong learning goals in a small computer lab? Currently, CompuPlace clients with disabilities attend by appointment Tuesdays through Thursdays between 10 AM and 4 PM. Most clients have cognitive, intellectual, communication, or developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum, Down syndrome, or traumatic brain injury. Some have dexterity-related disabilities that make it harder to use a computer. The CompuPlace lab is currently unused on Mondays and Fridays. In order not to waste this resource, and in the spirit of inclusion, we seek to expand our services beyond people with disabilities to people who have been left behind in the age of information, technology, and the internet. In addition to people with disabilities, people with low incomes, seniors, and rural adults are too often on the wrong side of a gaping digital divide. We seek a reliable team of volunteers to staff the lab for drop-in availability to Linn County residents with learning goals. Can you help? At CompuPlace, we start wherever the student is. It is a place where abilities are identified and harnessed, where it is safe to guess, where learning is supported, effort is applauded, and success celebrated with gusto. This method is equally appropriate for learners with and without disabilities. CompuPlace clients are often working on communication, spelling and reading, math and money, problem solving, professional behavior, and general computer skills. Some clients attend alone, some with group home house mates, and some in small and large groups. Many clients play games or surf the web in order to learn the skills they need to improve their lives. The CompuPlace way encourages people to direct their own lifelong learning. There is dignity in learning, and there is empowerment in self-directed continuing education. There is so much to know, so much to “Ask Google,” and so much yet to discover, both collectively and individually. If there are specific questions you have, please ask. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please let us know. If you are interested, please schedule a tour.
