United Way of East Central Iowa is hosting a large-scale service project and recognition event in honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 on Sep. 11th from 9am - 11am. We need volunteers to package 1000 Family Emergency Preparedness Disaster Starter Kits which will be distributed to underserved, vulnerable populations in our communities. In addition, we will honor those who unselfishly rise to service in response to disasters and emergencies. MSG Maniscalco Robinson, IA National Guard & Iowa Veterans’ Perspective, is our keynote speaker and will kick off the event with a powerful presentation and reflections on disaster response and the impacts of 9/11.
Volunteers can sign up as individuals or as a team. Families are welcome, but please be aware that we will address topics of emergencies and terrorism. Persons must be 12+ years old to volunteer with a parent or 16+ years old to volunteer on their own.
This event will be held in person at the Veterans Memorial Building Coliseum; however, we will abide by recommended mask-wearing recommendations and mandates in accordance with the CDC and the City of Cedar Rapids at the time of the event for vaccinated and unvaccinated persons. We will continue to social distance when possible. Adherence to these safety protocols will protect agencies that work with vulnerable populations and are more susceptible to illness and dangerous viruses.
Click the blue RESPOND button if you would like to sign up as an individual or RESPOND AS A TEAM if you would like to recruit others to join you. Additional instructions will be emailed to volunteers the week of the event.
