Volunteer: Language Lab Support Volunteer

What is the Language Lab?

Here at the Catherine McAuley Center, we strive to provide the best possible programming to meet our community’s needs. One of our programs that has taken off with great success is the Language Lab. The Language Lab is a drop in computer lab time where a tutor/coach facilitates and engages students to foster Digital Literacy, English competency, and student confidence by utilizing a variety of digital tools. The tools we use are targeted to reach as wide a range of computer and English literacy as possible- Whether it’s the student’s first time holding a mouse or the student has a background in IT, the Language Lab facilitator will try to find the right programs to help the student meet their goals.

When can students come and learn?

We work as best we can to meet the time needs of our students. To do this, we open our computer lab during our peak hours in the morning and evening. Right now we are open on Wednesday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 10 AM to noon, and on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 PM. In the future we plan on operating every morning and evening that we are open.

What else can students do to develop their digital literacy?

In addition to the drop in Language Lab times which are structured in a self guided format, students can sign up for one of our guided computer literacy classes that meets every Monday morning.  Currently we are taking steps to provide more of the guided digital literacy classes throughout the week.

How could I help?

The impact of volunteers cannot be overstated here at the CMC. Last year over 350 volunteer tutors helped make our programming possible! If you would like to be a part of what we do, you can sign up for a new tutor orientation on our website, cmc-cr.org/volunteer. Just follow the steps under the ‘volunteer’ tab.

Highest Needs: Monday 5-7pm, Tuesday 10-12pm and 5-7pm, Thursday 10-12pm and either 5-6pm or 6-7pm (only one hour of support needed), and Saturday 10-12pm.
