Who We Are

At MDA, we’re fighting to free individuals – and the families who love them – from the harmful effects of Muscular Dystrophy, ALS, and related life-threatening diseases so they can live longer and grow stronger. At MDA of Iowa we support families through a variety of programs including: MDA funded Care Centers, support groups, educational and advocacy events, a durable medical equipment loan program, funding for research, access to clinical trials, and a fun-filled week at summer camp for children provided at no cost to families. Every day freedoms such as the freedom to walk, to talk, to run and to play, are taken away from kids and adults with muscular dystrophy and related diseases that weaken muscle strength and limit mobility. Together we can change that. Together we can fight back.

What We Do

The MDA of Iowa office is located in Cedar Rapids and covers the entire state of Iowa and Western Illinois, helping to serve 1,750 patients and their families affected by over 43 different neuromuscular diseases. The majority of diseases under MDA's umbrella are caused by genetic factors. All result in progressive muscle weakness. Locally, MDA helps provide medical care through our clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. We also have a loan closet program for durable medical equipment to help meet our patient's medical equipment needs. Our patients are able to check out equipment at no cost to them for as long as they need it. We also sponsor our MDA Summer camp for children ages 8-17 at Camp Courageous in Monticello, Iowa. In 2017, we had 75 children from across the state attend summer camp at no cost to them. We also provide advocacy through education and opportunities for our families to get involved and fight back through our community outreach.
